Asbestos Testing

Asbestos was used for many years in buildings because of its flame resistance and insulating properties. But the inhalation of some kinds of asbestos fibres can cause serious illnesses including cancer which led to its ban in many countries. The problem arises when the minute fibres become airborne and are inhaled but the lungs cannot expel them.

The three main diseases associated with asbestos are:

  • Asbestosis
The scarring of the lung tissue from an acid produced by the body's attempt to dissolve the fibres. This scarring may eventually become so severe that the lungs can no longer function.
  • Mesothelioma
A cancer of the mesothelial lining of the lungs and the chest cavity, the abdominal cavity or the sac surrounding the heart.
  • Cancer
Cancer of the larynx has been linked to asbestos. Some studies suggest that asbestos exposure is related to a slightly increased risk of stomach, pharyngeal, and colorectal cancer.

Asbestos is still a threat. Is your building safe? A simple and quick asbestos assessment of your building by RM Risk Management will give you peace of mind.
